More than 200 members of Gympie’s rugby league family have gathered to celebrate the golden jubilee of the rebirth of the region’s premiership winning Rainbows club in style.
Players and their families from across five decades of the sport spent the night catching up with old friends, regaling new ones with tales from the region’s rugby heyday, and looking back on the storied history of the Rainbows.
Guests were treated to an historical overview of the Rainbow League Football Club, a tribute to Bill Gosling, the club’s only honorary life member, dinner, and a tribute to the former members who have died.
These were followed by a presentation from members of the Family of League, and the announcement and presentation of Jubilee Jerseys and to the Rainbows Jubilee Team and Coach.
The club had been running in the 1960s but was forced to shut.
It reformed in 1973, which marked the starting point celebrated at the Pavilion on Saturday night.
It was one of four clubs running in the Gympie region during the sports heyday, including Brothers, Suburbs, and Wanderers.
The club’s most famous player was Mark Harris who played 190 times for Eastern Suburbs and 33 times for North Sydney, and represented Australia 11 times, following his time at Rainbows.
Mr Harris died in 2020.
