Jaydon Lee George, 22, pleaded guilty in Gympie Magistrates Court Thursday to the serious assault of a a corrective services officer causing bodily harm, possessing a knife in public, and driving without a licence.

Facts tendered to the court as part of the sentencing said George punched the guard on June 22, 2023, as they walked into his cell at Woodford Correctional Centre.

The officer was left with a cut lip from the attack.

George appeared via videolink, having been jailed on November 14, 2023 for crimes including robbery in December 2022.

Jaydon Lee George was sentenced in Gympie Magistrates Court Thursday to one year jail, and allowed to keep his previously set parole release date of December 16.

Defence lawyer Laura Nightingale told the court her client had “anger issues” which he tried to address since he was taken into custody.

His grandmother, who was the only family member he had a consistent relationship with, died in 2021.

Magistrate Bevan Hughes told George the officer was doing “a very difficult and dangerous job” and was “entitled to feel safe in the workplace”.

The 22-year-old may feel “unhappy” with his situation, Mr Hughes said, but “it’s not the corrections service officer’s fault you’re where you are”.

“He’s just doing his job,” he said.

Mr Hughes sentenced George to one year jail, but allowed him to keep his previously set parole release date of December 16.

However the remainder of the sentence will stay suspended for a longer period, this time 18 months.
