Two weeks after release from Sunshine Coast University Hospital’s mental health ward following an involuntary admission, Daniel Geoffrey Hobson has pleaded guilty to five drug-related charges.

Shortly before midnight on July 9, 2023, the 42-year-old Veteran man was pulled over by police while driving on Ascot Rd in Victory Heights.

He told police he had smoked cannabis four hours earlier, and said he had a valid medicinal marijuana licence, Gympie Magistrates Court heard.

The roadside drug test also indicated the presence of methamphetamine.

Hobson was again stopped in his car in August, and police noticed a small bottle and hose at his feet, which he claimed was to smoke his prescription cannabis.

In September 2023, police spotted Hobson lingering at the back of the Queenslander Hotel.

Police prosecutor Christie Mahoney told the court Hobson was “evasive” when police asked what he was doing and why he was there.

They noticed his attempts at concealing a metal container on a keyring, she said.

When the police seized it, they found three concealed bags.

“They contained a small amount of crystal substance,” Sergeant Mahoney said.

Police seized 0.1g of meth and four capsules of unprescribed lisdexamfetamine.

The court heard that Hobson produced a used syringe from his pocket, and warned the police that they would find multiple syringes in his car.

Magistrate Bevan Hughes took into consideration Hobson’s diagnosis of schizophrenia, multiple personality disorder and ADHD.

He fined Hobson $600 and disqualified him from driving for one month.
