An 18-year-old Hervey Bay man has died after his 4WD crashed into an oncoming timber truck at Tuan Forest on Friday morning.
The high-schooler from Pialba, who is understood to have only just celebrated his Year 12 formal, died from his injuries at the scene.
It is the second horrific crash to occur in the region in three days, following the tragic death of a 56-year-old Brooloo woman near Kandanga on Wednesday.
According to a police statement, initial investigations indicate the 4WD was travelling along Maryborough Cooloola Rd towards Tin Can Bay when the crash happened about 6.40am.
A 17-year-old boy from Torquay in Hervey Bay was the only other passenger in the 4WD, and suffered “non-life threatening injuries”, according to a police statement.
Inspector Paul Algie told reporters the 4WD was travelling as part of a convoy of three vehicles.
He said the group were travelling towards Tin Can Bay to celebrate the long weekend.
The driver of the truck, a 52-year-old Glass House Mountains man, suffered minor injuries.
Police are asking for anyone who saw, or has dash cam footage of three 4WD utes travelling together between Hervey Bay to Maryborough towards Tin Can Bay to contact police.
Friday morning’s accident happened in the Tuan State Forest near the turn-off to Tinnanbar between Maryborough and Rainbow Beach.
The 18-year-old was left trapped in the wreckage of the 4WD and the truck burst into flames after rolling and coming to a rest on its side.
A QAS spokeswoman said the 17-year-old was taken to Hervey Bay Hospital suffering from shock.
As the end of school holidays approaches, police have urged drivers to drive carefully and to avoid the area of the crash completely as the road is expected to be closed for hours.
“This is a tragic crash leading into the long weekend, a family have now lost a son, and a treasured member of the community,” Inspector Algie said.
“Leading into the long weekend, when a lot of people are on the roads, I implore all people in the area – slow down, avoid distractions, get to your location alive.”
“One life lost on Queensland roads is too many,” he said.
Forensic crash unit investigations are ongoing.
