The Mary Valley Rattler is calling on tinkers and train-lovers to join their team of volunteers, with an Open Day to allow anyone interested the chance to get involved.

An Open Day is being held this Thursday, May 27, from 11am-1pm at the Mary Valley Rattler Workshop in Chapple Street, Gympie – the ultimate “tinker’s shed”.

This is where the Rattler’s fleet of heritage rail locomotives are methodically resurrected, restored, maintained and polished to a brilliant finish ready to impress when they head out onto the tracks.

The Workshop Open Day is a great opportunity for anyone from the age of 18 to 80 with a passion for trains and heritage rail to consider joining the Rattler’s volunteer crew.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to ‘to stick your nose in our shed’ and meet some of our most valued volunteers,” said Celeste Frances Scott, the Volunteer Coordinator for the Rattler.

“We would love interested people to take a look at projects we are working on and whilst here, enjoy a freshly cooked sausage straight off the workshop BBQ.”

Ms Frances Scott said what makes the Rattler special is that it is based around volunteers.

“They are the life and soul of the operation and we constantly see that in the positive visitor reaction we receive from guests,” she said.

“The Rattler is a place where friendships are forged, new skills are learnt and shared, and a true sense of achievement is seen when projects are completed.”

Some of the Open Day’s events include a diesel in operation, demonstrations on metal work, carriage builds, general maintenance, restoration and maintenance.

“At the Workshop there is always a new project on the go, looking for an enthusiastic volunteer to make it their own,” Ms Frances Scott Said.
