The Gympie magistrate did not hold back after his court heard how the serial woman basher punched his partner in the head while she was holding one of their children.

A 44-year-old Gympie man who punched his partner in the head while she was holding one of their children will stay behind bars until almost November, 2021.

The man appeared in custody via video link in the Gympie Magistrates Court on Tuesday, pleading guilty to contravening a domestic violence order and driving while under the influence of drugs.

The court heard the man deliberately hit his partner in the face in February while she was holding their child.

Police prosecutor Michael Phillips said an argument then ensued, and the man punched the woman in the head while calling her a “retard” and a “sl--”.

The victim then fled the house with the two children.

Sergeant Phillips told the court this was not the man’s first contravention, as he had a history of “serious violence towards women”.

“Once again, the defendant finds himself before the court for acts of violence against a female for whom he is in a relationship with,” he said.

He said the man had a significant history, including five contraventions of a domestic violence order, two breaches of a suspended sentence for causing grievous bodily harm, and two domestic violence charges from the current victim.

Defence lawyer Chris Anderson told the court his client had been in pre-sentence custody for 71 days.

He also said the victim had not suffered serious physical injuries.

Sergeant Phillips however, told the court the victim has suffered mental damage as a result of the attack.

Magistrate Kurt Fowler took into account the man’s previous offences for his sentence.

“What is clear, sir, is you have an offensive, disgusting and immoral approach to your relationships,” he said.

The man was sentenced to two years jail, with a parole release date of October 29, 2021.
