Gympie region man denied bail for repeat domestic violence offences
The man said he “should have read the fine print” of a domestic violence order after he was given a suspended sentence in July, and was denied bail after breaching the order a month later.

A 35-year-old Gympie region man was denied bail on Monday after breaching a domestic violence order while on a suspended sentence.
The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, entered the dock in Gympie Magistrates Court wearing prison greens and was handcuffed with a police escort.
He entered no plea and sat silently in the dock while looking at the ceiling and around the room.
One supporter, revealed to be his mother, sat silently in the public gallery throughout his appearance.

The details of the man’s alleged crimes were not shared, but the court heard of an alleged “physical altercation” between him and his partner.
The police prosecutor said the man had a history of domestic violence, and Magistrate Chris Callaghan said the alleged offences were committed while he was on a suspended sentence.
After he was denied bail, the man asked Mr Callaghan if he could speak.
He said he should have read “the fine print” after he was given a suspended sentence for a previous domestic violence offence in July, and said he misunderstood the conditions of the domestic violence order.
He was remanded in custody and will reappear in Gympie Magistrates Court for mention on September 6.
