Gympie mayor Glen Hartwig, wife Talitha injured in car crash

The mayor of Gympie was recovering in hospital and his wife had been discharged after their car crashed off a rural road after leaving an election forum on Monday night, rolling several times.

Gympie Mayor Glen Hartwig was in “good spirits” and his wife Talitha had left hospital after the couple were injured when their car rolled and crashed into an embankment en route to an election forum on Monday night.

The couple had left a meet the candidates forum at the Goomboorian Hall about 20km out of Gympie, and were on their way to another forum at Mothar Mountain when their car left Pokela Rd about 6.51pm.

It crashed down an embankment, rolling several times.

A QFES spokeswoman said one person was initially trapped in the wreckage but was able to extricate themselves by the time emergency crews arrived at the scene.

Mr Hartwig was treated for neck injuries, and Mrs Hartwig for head injuries.

The couple were taken to Gympie Hospital.

In a released statement, a council spokeswoman said Mr Hartwig was “currently receiving the relevant care in hospital and is in good spirits, and (his wife Talitha) has been discharged and is in good health”.

“Despite this unfortunate incident, (Mr) Hartwig remains committed to serving our community and has said that he looks forward to returning to his duties as soon as possible while continuing his campaign,” she said.

“(Mr) Hartwig will return to the Senior Citizens Centre as soon as possible as early voting has commenced.”
