Young Gympie hockey superstar Connor Innes has been selected in the extended Queensland Under 18 boys squad, putting him in the running to compete at a national tournament next year.
The Gympie & District Hockey Association announced this week that Innis had made the squad, with trials to make the final team coming early in 2022.
“Congratulations Connor Innis, selected in the Qld Under 18 Boys Squad,” the GDHA wrote on Facebook.
“Connor will attend trials in February where the final team will be selected to go to Nationals.”
The GDHA comments section was packed with messages of good luck and further congratulations for the young talent.
The news comes on the back of the Gold City being cleared to host the U13 Girls State Hockey Championships starting Sunday (July 4), after Hockey Queensland elected to proceed with the state titles as planned on Wednesday morning.
The status of the championships was plunged into limbo on Tuesday morning (June 29) after Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced a snap three-day Covid lockdown for parts of the state, to take effect until Friday night at the earliest.
The GDHA is expected to host a big influx of visitors for the four-day tournament, with 29 teams slated to compete across three divisions at the local hockey fields on Power Rd, Southside.
The GDHA posted another message of congratulations to the boys’ and girls’ squads to step on the field in Townsville and the Gold City, respectively.
