Members of the Glenwood community expressed their distress after a local vigilante boasted on Facebook that he had been killing cats who escaped at night in order to preserve wildlife.

The alleged cat killer, who will not be named for legal reasons, posted in a Facebook group that he had caught a total of eight cats in his trap across the period of a week and “humanely disposed” of them.

“When are you going to learn that our wildlife is suffering because of irresponsible people,” he said in the post.

“Trap set again, the more the better.

“Keep letting it out and I’ll pin its collar on the noticeboard at the servo.”

A Glenwood local and cat owner Tony Field said he was angered to see the post, along with many other residents.

“He is just a bad person … had no remorse for locals’ feelings,” Mr Field told The Gympie Times.

“At least give the public a chance to get their pet back.

“That's okay to protect something, but to kill something else in its place, and it could be some little kid’s pet, kids never forget the pets they have lost.”

While the post has now been removed from the page, Mr Field said he knew of one local woman who had lost her cat in the area recently.

“An older woman was going around asking shops and other locals if they have seen her cat that got out,” he said.

“That lady was not happy.”

The Gympie Times has tried to contact the owner of the account for comment, but had not received a response by deadline.

Mr Field was unaware if the killing had been reported to the police and said protecting wildlife was no excuse.

“Not only do I believe that his behaviour is illegal, it’s inhumane and in our little community, I expect better,” he said.

“Not only to do the act, then to gloat on Facebook is totally unacceptable.”
