Selina Barron opens up on moment her car caught fire on Gympie road

A young Gympie woman has been left ‘gutted’ after the car she had just spent thousands of dollars on exploded in flames on a busy city road on her way to work. Watch the video here:

A young Gympie woman has been left “gutted” and her pride and joy Ford Focus a scorched, melted wreck after the car burst into flames while she was driving to work on a busy CBD road.

Selina Barron was driving along Horseshoe Bend just before 10am when disaster struck at the intersection of Power St.

“I was just driving along and smoke started coming up … over the bonnet, and then it started coming in through the air vents and the air cons,” Mrs Barron said.

“I just pulled over … and just started running.

“It was like ‘I don’t want to be around that’.”

She escaped from the burning car unharmed.

Firefighters worked for about 10 minutes to extinguish the burning engine, with the section of road blocked and traffic diverted around the scene.

Police at the scene said the car had overheated and caught fire.

Mrs Barron said the destruction of her car was the latest in a growing list of unfortunate incidents ruining her year.

“I broke my phone, I don‘t even have a phone at the moment … my dog’s got a broken jaw.

“This years just really kicking me.”

Her lack of a phone left her unable to call anyone once her car started to burn.

She was grateful a good Samaritan jumped in to help’

“A lovely guy in a Woolworths truck pulled over and he told me ‘don’t go near it’,” Mrs Barron said.

The loss of the car was especially devastating to Mrs Barron, who cherished the Ford she had owned for more than two years.

“I‘d just put a new stereo in and spent $1500 on a touch screen, and I’d just got the rims on it not long ago too and put tyres on it not even five weeks ago,” she said.

“I painted the car myself.

“It‘s what I enjoyed … now it’s gone up in flames.

“It‘s gutting”
