One of Gympie’s oldest businesses is entering a brand new era.
The 70-year-stalwart Madills Motor Group has broken ground on its new multi-million dollar expansion on the Bruce Highway opposite Bunnings, with an eye on throwing the doors open to the public “early in 2022”.
Madills Mazda dealer principal Adam Madill said it was great to see the long-mooted project at the corner of the highway and Laurenceson Rd finally underway.
“It’s been a long time coming, but worth the wait,” Mr Madill said.
He declined to put a price to the size of the centre.
It will include a new showroom, service centre and outdoor vehicle display area.
Madill’s Mazda and Suzuki dealership, located on the highway opposite Gympie Central shopping centre, will be moving onto the site once it is finished.
The fate of that CBD property was still up in the air and could remain a branch of the company in some fashion.
“We haven’t made any plans for there,” Mr Madill said.
The new Monkland dealership opened the door to the company adding more staff down the line.
Mr Madill said the development represented a significant reinvestment and commitment to the Gympie region.
“We’ve engaged the Gympie Building Company, and have a lot of Gympie subbies,” Mr Madill said.
“It shows we’re backing Gympie and investing in the future of Gympie.”
The new centre is the latest major change for the Madill Motor Group.
In early 2020 its seven businesses were bought by the Brisbane-based Motorama group for an undisclosed sum.
The company first opened a branch in Gympie in 1935.
