Covid continues to surge in the Gympie region, with Queensland Health data revealing 2732 active cases in the council area as of Tuesday, May 3.

The Gympie Regional C0uncil workforce has been so decimated by Covid that hundreds of staff were emailed on Tuesday morning and asked to work from home if possible.

Across Queensland, there were 1,007,459 active cases on Tuesday, with 466 people in hospital and 15 in intensive care.

Acting Gympie council CEO Dave Lewis confirmed that a number of staff had tested positive to Covid or were isolating.

“We have protocols in place to deal with this,” Mr Lewis said.

“Residents will not see any changes to council’s service levels. Our main focus at the moment is supporting staff who are ill or isolating at home. All of our staff are following the advice from Queensland Health.”

Unconfirmed reports of a council staff party on Friday night might not have helped the situation.
