‘I wasn’t leaving him’: Mum relives last moments with son after deadly crash

The grieving mother of 19-year-old Glenwood man Cody Bergemann has recounted her last moments with her son and shared how he will be remembered.

Katherine Bergemann is living every parent’s worst nightmare after Cody was killed in a rollover on Neerdie Rd, Glenwood, at 11.50pm on Wednesday, June 1.

She recounted the harrowing experience to the Gympie Times on Tuesday.

It comes as Ms Bergemann shared her heartbreak to the masses in a series of online videos.

She said Cody had been convoying home with his friends, who were in a separate car in front of him, when his headlights suddenly disappeared from view.

They turned around, only to make a horrific discovery.

Cody’s ute, which Ms Bergemann said was his “pride and joy”, had hit some loose gravel on the notorious bend and rolled. He was underneath.

Panicked and distraught at what they had just seen, Cody’s friends ran to get help.

“They flew (to our house) … and they ran up my driveway and they banged on our door,” she said.

“They said ‘help, we need help, Cody’s under the car. I think he’s dead, we need help!’”

Without a second thought, Ms Bergemann and her husband leapt into action and raced to the scene, calling 000 as they went.

She said they were the first at the scene and stayed with Cody until the paramedics confirmed everyone’s worst fears.

“He went peacefully,” Ms Bergemann said.

“I wasn’t leaving him until they said he was gone.”

A memorial has since been established at the crash site, a few hundred metres before Gunna Park.

Shards of glass and a discarded shattered windscreen are the only remnants left of the horrific scene.

Ms Bergemann said the last thing Cody had said to her was a “goodnight” text, only hours before he died.

In a cruel twist of fate, she had sent him another text telling him to drive safely, but he never read it.

She described her son as a “cheeky” aspiring builder, who “loved life”.

But above all, he loved his friends.

“He always looked after his mates,” she said.

“He made sure they were all safe. He was their rock.

“I don’t think he realised how many lives he touched.”

She said the family was in the process of building volleyball courts at their property for Glenwood young people to use; two of which would be dedicated to Cody.

A plaque in his name will also be installed.

Ms Bergemann said Cody was heavily involved in the project, and had planned to help his mum the day after he died.

The family is now in the stages of planning Cody’s funeral, but a date has not been set on when Cody will be farewelled.

A GoFundMe created by Rebecca Davy surpassed its goal in less than 24 hours and has raised $3,190 at the time of publishing.
