A growing chorus of voices is calling for police to reopen the investigation into the death of Gympie woman Sarah Brown, whose body was found in bushland near her home and ruled a suicide in 2021, but who more and more people now believe was murdered.

A petition launched to pressure authorities into reopening the investigation in the death by Gympie woman Sarah Brown had almost 3000 signatures by Thursday afternoon, September 5, with a goal of getting 5000.

Organiser “Jamie” in Brisbane launched the change.org petition on August 19, 2024, after years of questions over what the police ruled was Sarah’s suicide in bushland near Gympie in 2021. Her body was not found for a week after she first went missing, despite a massive search operation.

“Sarah went missing on June 7, 2021 and was found deceased seven days later in nearby bushland near her place of residence,” the change.org petition states.

“The police quickly concluded that her death was a suicide. However, given the circumstances surrounding her demise, many, including those who were close to Sarah, feel her passing was not self-inflicted but an act of murder.

“Sarah’s mother, Janet Gardner, has penned a request to the Coroner to have the case reexamined, based on the suspicion that implicates foul play in her daughter’s death. But, we require public interest and support for her plea to be considered. It’s vital for the essence of justice and for the safety of our community that every potential lead is thoroughly investigated and no stone is left unturned.

Retired detective and private investigator Graeme Crowley has a different view on the cause of death of 23-year-old Gympie woman Sarah Brown in 2021, which was originally ruled a suicide. His podcast is called “Who killed Sarah Brown?”

“It is deeply troubling to think that a murderer could be walking free in our town, while Sarah’s family is left grieving.

“For Janet, Sarah was not just a statistic; she was a beloved daughter whose loss cannot be quantified.

“Through this petition, we ask the Coroner to show commitment to justice and reopen the case to reexamine every suggestive detail that suggests Sarah’s death was not suicide.

“We maintain utmost respect for their work, but the pursuit of truth and justice for Sarah and her grieving mother cannot and should not be abandoned.
