Drink driving: A guide to safe drinking

A Gympie man who was so drunk he ran into trees while trying to get out of his driveway, was given a hefty fine and lost his licence for a year on Monday.

Alex Neilson, 22, pleaded guilty to the offence.

At 9.35pm on Batchelor Rd on October 16, police were responding to a disturbance call from a local party when Neilson returned to the part and appeared “extremely” drunk while still in his vehicle.

Neilson took a breath test where it was revealed he had a blood alcohol content of .209 percent.

The police prosecutor told the court Neilson revealed that night he had consumed two thirds of a bottle of Bundaberg Rum bottle between 4pm-8pm.

He told the court he had gotten into an argument with his father, which was why he made the “foolish” decision to leave in his car.

Neilson has had two previous drink driving convictions, both in 2018 where his first conviction showed a BAC reading of .055 per cent and his second showed a BAC reading of .09 per cent. He had his licence disqualified for two years.

Magistrate Chris Callaghan disqualified Neilson from driving for 12 months and fined him $1500. A conviction was recorded.
