Jason Ayres sentenced in court for secretly filming woman in the shower

A Gympie miner’s text to the woman he secretly filmed in the shower told her “the thought of seeing you naked very much excited me”.

What happens after a sexual assault?

A Gympie miner who secretly filmed a woman while she was taking a shower escaped jail when he faced the Gympie Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Jason Ayres, 41, pleaded guilty to the non-consensual filming of the woman while she did a “private act”.

Ayres secretly recorded the victim on his phone by leaving it on record and in the back pocket of a pair of pants he left laying in the bathroom.

The offence took place in a house between July 1, 2020, and May 31, 2021.

One day during that time, the victim received several text messages from Ayres indicating he had a crush on her and that he had something important to tell her.

One of the texts was read out to the court. It said:

“You’re going to think I’m a piece of shit and I hope you don’t tell anyone. Fully understand if you did. I left my phone in the pocket of my pants in the shower and kind of filmed you half naked.

“You could hardly see anything and I look back and see how much of a grubby act and a very slimy thing to do. I swear it was only a once off and I deleted it straight away and didn’t share it with anyone. But like I said, the thought of seeing you naked very much excited me and I know you will probably never forgive me but I am truly sorry and being honest.”

The victim did not respond to the messages and immediately called police.

When police arrived with a search warrant on July 14, 2021, the video recording had been deleted from the phone.

However, Ayres was taken to the police station where he confessed he had committed the offence. He was then arrested, taken to the watch house, charged and offered bail.

Ayres was also convicted of possessing several illegal drugs and steroids, which he had no legal permission to have. He was sentenced to three months jail, suspended for nine months.
