William Jayden James Walker, 20, used private company’s sprinklers to ‘wet tyres’ before performing burnout while out on 40 driving charges

A young Gladstone man intentionally using the sprinkler system of a private garage to ‘wet his tyres’ before fishtailing across a major road and losing control near oncoming traffic. Here’s what happened in court.

Bizarre road rules that carry big fines

A Gladstone man, who currently has 40 traffic offences before court, has pleaded guilty after CCTV pinned him using private sprinklers to wet his tyres before fishtailing across a major road.

William Jayden James Walker, 20, pleaded guilty in the Gladstone Magistrates Court to the dangerous operation of a motor vehicle following an incident where he lost control of his car on February 9.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Merrilyn Hoskins alleged Walker was caught by the CCTV footage entering the garage of a private property, believed to belong to a business, on Bryan Jordan Drive, Callemondah where he used the sprinkler system to wet the tyres of his vehicle.

“About 1.30pm, the defendant then left the premise where he intentionally accelerated to break traction and drift, the rear of the vehicle then fishtailed in an uncontrolled manner and slid 90 degrees,” Sergeant Hoskins said.

Police say when the vehicle Walker was operating slid towards the footpath, he then overcorrected and rotated 90 degrees before resting across both lanes, blocking oncoming traffic.

Police located Walker on March 6 and when he refused to answer questions in relation to the footage, he was taken into police custody until his court appearance on Tuesday, March 8.

Magistrate Seaholme said Walker had an extensive traffic history, especially for his age.

Defence Lawyer, Joshua Gibson said Walker did use the sprinkler system to wet his tyres, however, he thought they were available to the public and he intended to wash the rest of the vehicle but something prompted him to leave the premises early.

Walker was released on bail and placed on 12 months probation, as well as having his driver’s licence disqualified for six months.

He will appear in court later this year to face further offences.
