A sexual predator assaulted a 12-year-old girl while others slept in the same room, a court has been told.
Nathan William Parry, 25, pleaded guilty on Tuesday in Gladstone District Court to four counts of indecent treatment of children under 16.
This was not Parry’s first appearance in Gladstone District Court for child sex offences, as he and his brother both avoided jail for similar offences in 2019.
Crown prosecutor Geoffrey Wong told the court Parry’s offending occurred over a two-night span, somewhere between October 2017 and November 2018, when his 12-year-old victim was trying to sleep.
“The first occasion involved Parry, between 21 and 22 at the time, touching the victim’s chest area over the top of her pyjamas as she laid on a couch, while other people slept in the house,” he said.
“On the second occasion the victim was sleeping on a fold-out couch with two people asleep nearby, the defendant began to touch her feet which led to the victim confronting him.
“Instead of desisting, he proceeded further and moved his hand up the victim’s leg and began to stroke her buttocks.
“Parry then woke the people in the room and told them to go to their bedroom, before he returned and resumed his offending.
“He stroked her chest, over her pyjamas, then he removed a blanket which covered her and touched her inappropriately over her clothing. He kept his hand there for about a minute.”
Parry’s offending came to light on January 14, 2021 after the victim told a family member about it.
Parry was spoken to the next day, denied the offending and was charged but released on bail.
Defence solicitor Tom Polley submitted for Parry to be sentenced to six months imprisonment, which would then be wholly suspended.
Judge Catherine Muir said Parry had spared his victim the ordeal of cross examination by pleading guilty at an early stage.
“This offending is serious, you were some eight or nine years older than the young victim, it was on two occasions very opportunistic and a real breach of trust,” she said.
“It has had a devastating impact on the victim, what has happened has haunted her and will continue to do so for some time.”
Parry was convicted and sentenced to eight months imprisonment, wholly suspended for three years.
He was also placed on three years probation with convictions recorded for all offences.
