A Central Queensland man who threatened to kill his much younger wife because she was “always sending money” to relatives overseas, has faced court.

The 76-year-old, who by law cannot be named, pleaded guilty in Gladstone Magistrates Court on February 19 to contravening a domestic violence order.

The court heard that on the morning of December 2, police attended a home in the Gladstone region after receiving a Triple-0 call.

It was told that when officers arrived, the man’s wife, who is much younger than him, was hysterical and she told them there had been an argument over money and groceries.

The court heard the man had placed his hands on his wife’s neck and chest about three times and pushed her.

While this was happening, the man told his wife: “I could kill you.”

There were no visible injuries to the woman.

The court was told that the argument had erupted because the man was angry that his wife was “always sending money” to relatives in the Philippines, and he’d spent thousands on her.

It also heard the man had no prior offending of this sort.

Magistrate Mary Buchanan fined the man $1000 and a conviction was recorded.
