A Central Queensland man’s hooning was so bad, he damaged a $50,000 car to the point where it started “making an indentation in the road” when he didn’t stop, a court has heard.

Jackson Peter Adnum, 25, pleaded guilty in Gladstone Magistrates Court to dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

The court heard about 1.10am one morning, Adnum was behind the wheel near Toolooa State High School when he drove onto a centre traffic island and knocked over a “keep left” sign.

The car continued along the island for about 10m before it hit a brick retaining wall.

The impact with the wall caused the airbag to be deployed.

The court heard that Adnum “pushed the airbag down” and kept driving.

His car then mounted the centre traffic island again and crossed over to the wrong side of the road.

Adnum drove the car back over the island to the correct side of the road, damaging it further.

He continued driving through Gladstone streets, causing more damage to his tyres and rims.

The court heard that Adnum’s car was so damaged that, as he kept driving it, the vehicle started “making an indentation in the road.”

The court was told he eventually shredded the tyres “completely off the rims” before pulling over and leaving it where it was.

Adnum had no traffic history and no criminal history.

Solicitor Cassandra Ditchfield said Adnum worked as a trades assistant and his mum was in court to support him.

The court heard at the time of the offending, Adnum’s mental health had been affected after a relationship breakup.

Ms Ditchfield said Adnum’s car was only purchased this year - a $50,000 vehicle - and because of his offending, the damage would not be covered by insurance.

“So he’s suffered a significant loss already,” she said.

“Until such time as the tyres actually came off the rims, he didn’t appreciate that it (car) was in the state that it was in.

“So that’s shredded off as he’s gone around the roundabout.

“Because he wasn’t able to keep control of his vehicle any longer once the tyres have completely shredded off the rims, he realises it can’t be driven further and that’s when he’s pulled over.”

Prior to the imposing penalty, Magistrate Mary Buchanan said it was “very fortunate” no-one was injured during the incident which was “dreadful driving.”

Ms Buchanan fined Adnum $2000 and disqualified him from driving for six months.

No conviction was recorded.
