A man riding a bike without a helmet while using a mobile phone was a pretty easy get for Central Queensland police but upon further investigation, they discovered he was a drug dealer.

A young Central Queensland labourer did drug deals using Facebook Messenger, a court has heard.

Jack Corey Brett Rodgers, 21, appeared in custody in Gladstone Magistrates Court where he pleaded guilty to 13 charges including supplying dangerous drugs, three counts of possessing dangerous drugs, unlicensed driving and failing to appear in court.

The court heard Rodgers was caught with cannabis after police executed a search warrant at his home.

It was told that on another occasion on Dalrymple Drive, police busted him with methamphetamine.

In relation to the drug supply offence, police prosecutor Jennifer Leach said in August police saw Rodgers riding a bike without a helmet and while using a mobile phone.

Ms Leach said police found cannabis in Rodgers’ bag and on his mobile phone, they saw a message on Facebook Messenger in relation to drugs.

“Police further observed on Facebook, recent messages... between (Rodgers) and (another person) where (that person) was seeking $100 worth of cannabis and drugs were provided,” Ms Leach said.

Rodgers had a five-page criminal history which Ms Leach said was “littered with” bail breach offences and it also had previous drug offending on it.

The court heard these latest offences were committed while Rodgers was on parole.

He also had a two-page traffic record.

Solicitor Stephen White said Rodgers, who had previously worked as a labourer, had sought counselling for his drug problem while in custody.

“He has instructed me, that he realises that he does indeed have a drug problem,” Mr White said.

Magistrate Mary Buchanan sentenced Rodgers to six months’ jail, declared 83 days’ pre-sentence custody as time already served, and fixed immediate parole eligibility.

Rodgers was also fined $650, disqualified from driving for one month, and convictions were recorded.
