A drunk, unemployed Calliope man was caught by police in a late night dash “going nowhere” driving more than double the speed limit with an initial blood alcohol reading seven times over.
Andrew Beau Biancucci, 38, pleaded guilty in the Gladstone Magistrate Court to dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, namely driving at more than 40km/h over the speed limit, and driving while under the influence of alcohol.
On 17 February, Biancucci was spotted by police about 11.10pm speeding in a green Holden Cruze at the intersection of Philip St and the Dawson Hwy.
Police began to follow the driver, and sole occupant, where he was initially observed driving 100km in a 60km zone.
Biancucci then turned onto Shaw St, New Auckland where he then accelerated and was clocked driving 115km/h in a 50km/h zone.
Officers in an unmarked police vehicle then engaged their sirens and pulled the man over where he was subject to a breathalyser test.
The initial roadside breath test recorded a blood-alcohol concentration of .357 per cent, more than seven times the .05 per cent legal limit.
Following this reading, Biancucci was transported to hospital and later returned a reading of .215 per cent.
Police say Biancucci provided no emergent reason for his “reckless” speeding and said he was just doing it to “annoy someone” despite being the sole occupant of the vehicle.
Biancucci was fined $1286 for speeding and a further $1500 for driving under the influence, bringing his total to $2786.
The fine was referred to SPER.
Biancucci was further punished and disqualified from driving for 15 months. A conviction was recorded.
