Despite having a new incentive to stay out of trouble, a serial Central Queensland vehicle thief is behind bars for his latest crimes.

A serial Central Queensland vehicle thief has been jailed for his latest crimes, with a court hearing that he now has a new incentive to stay out of trouble.

Calib Keith Alley, 30, appeared in custody in Gladstone Magistrates Court where he pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a motor vehicle, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, unlicensed driving and four breaches of bail.

The court heard that in September, a Husqvarna motorbike was stolen from a residence and later, police found Alley in possession of that bike.

Police prosecutor Kelvin Boyd said the most serious offence was the unlawful use of motor vehicle which happened on October 12 while Alley was on parole for unlike offending.

At the time of committing this offence, Alley’s driver’s licence was SPER suspended.

The four bail breaches happened in October.

Alley had a 12-page criminal history which included multiple previous unlawful use of motor vehicle offences.

Solicitor Bianca Wieland said Alley was in court in 2022 for similar offences.

“However it is my submission those offences in 2022 were more serious... he was driving a stolen vehicle actively avoiding police and he was also charged with evasion,” Ms Wieland said.

In relation to the latest offences, Ms Wieland said Alley, a single dad of two, was remorseful and he now had a new incentive to stay out of trouble to spend more time with his children.

“They’ve been residing... with their mother,” Ms Wieland said.

“However he advises that his oldest son now wants a relationship with him and there are arrangements to be made (for that).

“This is a significant step for (him)... and he would like to look after his son and be a good role model.”

Prior to sentencing on November 13, Magistrate Mary Buchanan noted that Alley had numerous previous convictions for unlawful use of motor vehicles and she said: “Nothing seems to deter you from continuing to commit this type of offence and other offences”.

Ms Buchanan sentenced Alley to 12 months’ jail, declared 32 days’ pre-sentence custody as time already served, and fixed parole eligibility at December 12, 2024.

Alley was also disqualified from driving for one month and convictions were recorded.
