A man allegedly caught with “a large amount of methamphetamine” during a vehicle intercept, has made a bid for freedom in the lead-up to Christmas.
Aaron Demos, 31, appeared in custody in Gladstone Magistrates Court on December 20 where he made a bail application.
He is facing charges including possessing dangerous drugs and obstructing police.
The prosecution objected to bail and the court heard that Mr Demos was not in a show cause position.
Police prosecutor Jennifer Leach said the most serious of the charges related to Mr Demos allegedly being found in possession of 13.6g of methamphetamine while he was a passenger in a vehicle that police stopped for a search.
Ms Leach said it was alleged Mr Demos obstructed police during that search.
The prosecutor said the 13.6g of meth allegedly found had a “street value of over $6000.”
“The defendant was also (allegedly) in possession of a mobile phone and fresh clip-seal bags, which showed that he was prepared to supply the large amount of methamphetamine he had in his possession,” Ms Leach said.
Ms Leach said Mr Demos’ criminal history showed he had previously breached bail and the prosecution submitted he was an unacceptable risk of failing to appear and committing further offences.
Solicitor Cam Schroder said Mr Demos had drug offending on his Victorian criminal history and he had moved to Queensland “to clean himself up” where he got a job as a painter.
Mr Schroder said Mr Demos had suffered from benzene poisoning and then a serious motorbike accident.
The solicitor said he was concerned that, should Mr Demos’ bail application not be successful, he may spend too long in custody.
Magistrate Mary Buchanan noted that Mr Demos was not in a show cause position before granting him bail with strict conditions.
Those conditions included an 8pm to 6am curfew and Mr Demos must live at a Clinton residence, as well as report to police three times a week.
He is further required to submit to random drug testing and return negative results to those.
His matters were adjourned to February 13.
