The industrial powerhouse city of Gladstone will have a plan developed for a ‘Transition Economy Strategy’ to promote the move to net zero emissions.

Gladstone region councillors all voted in favour of procuring consultants The Next Economy to develop the strategy, at an initial cost of $92,000 excluding GST.

The meeting agenda for August 3 shows TNE helps develop strategies with the community to help shift to a carbon neutral economy and to manage the closure of existing industries by reducing the impact on the community, and strengthening and diversifying their economies.

This motion follows the Central Queensland Energy Futures Summit held in Gladstone in April.

TNE developed a report which found key messages included the declining fossil fuel industry and more options for renewable energy, major countries adopting net-zero goals, solar being the cheapest form of energy in history, the vulnerability of Central Queensland, and the potential Australia has for producing and exporting renewable energy.

Priority action areas identified in the report are the need for government and political support, the necessity for a co-ordination body, the urgency of regional and strategic planning, and to protect employees and communities impacted by energy transitions.

Councillor Natalia Muszkat said she had a really good experience with TNE in the past and looked forward to working with it again.

“[TNE] actually values the current way which we do business and values very much the way we used to do it, and also continues to see how we’re going to do it in the future, but not in a divisive way,” she said.

Deputy mayor Kahn Goodluck said he absolutely supported the motion but still hoped the closure of industries was a ‘last case’ scenario.

“The best way to mitigate these impacts is to make sure it doesn't happen to the best of our ability,” he said.

He wants to make sure Gladstone is still the ‘industrial capital’ for decades to come.
