Two mates on a working holiday have found themselves in trouble with the law after they entered a Gatton home and stole a number of items.
The Gatton Magistrates Court was told 18-year-olds Dominic Justin Suren Sharma and Gareth Dzinashe Madhuku had been living out of a car while working as farm hands at the time of the offence.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Narelle Lowe said the pair entered a Gatton man’s home after he left the property for a few hours on January 10, and took off with four packets of instant noodles, 12 bottles of wine, six cans of Canadian Club Dry, and six bottles of Hahn beer.
Sergeant Lowe said neighbours pointed police to a car that had been parked on a vacant lot near the man’s house, which the two men had been living in.
She said police later located the car parked on Spencer St, and Madhuku was inside, along with a number of empty liquor containers, nine bottles of wine, letters addressed to the victim, stolen headphones, and a bong.
Sergeant Lowe said Madhuku admitted to being inside the house with his mate Sharma, who wasn’t in the car at the time as he was at work.
Madhuku also admitted to using the bong to smoke cannabis.
Days later, Sergeant Lowe said police again spotted the car at a local park, disturbing a sleeping Madhuku who promptly attempted to hide a small amount of cannabis under a seat.
The court was told the childhood friends, who now sold firewood, were allegedly ripped off by a local farmer, which led them to enter the man’s home in search of food.
Madhuku and Sharma pleaded guilty to entering a premises to commit an indictable offence, however Madhuku also pleaded guilty to possessing drugs, and possessing a drug utensil.
Magistrate Shane Elliott noted the young men had no criminal history and fined them $1000 each.
No convictions were recorded.
