Police and SES search for evidence after Boronia Heights man allegedly mowed down with car in Withcott

Police and SES crews are searching the bottom of the Toowoomba Range where detectives allege a man was struck by a car in a deliberate attempt to kill.

Police appeal for witnesses to alleged attempted murder

Police have put the call out for anyone who observed a suspicious 2004 Holden Rodeo as it may form a key part of their case against a man who is alleged to have intentionally ran over another man at Withcott.

The vehicle has a distinctive silver snorkel and may be parked beside a house or abandoned on a country road.

Toowoomba Detective Senior Sergeant Paul McCusker made the appeal on Wednesday as police and SES volunteers returned to the site of the near-fatal incident in search of evidence.

“We ask anyone with information to come forward because we do need that vehicle and we don’t want it out in the public,” he said.

Toowoomba detectives investigating an incident involving a 33-year-old man allegedly being deliberately struck by a vehicle at Withcott on November 20, are appealing for witnesses, dashcam vision and a missing Holden Rodeo utility with a distinctive silver snorkel.

Police will allege that Jonathan Wright, 46, and two other people met at an address in Toowoomba on November 20 and that afterwards Mr Wright followed the pair as they travelled in a white Nissan Tiida hatch down the Toowoomba Range.

It will be further alleged that Mr Wright intentionally rammed the Tiida off the eastbound lanes of Toowoomba Connection Road as the pair entered Withcott then proceeded to run over a 33-year-old man after he exited the Tiida, inflicting a serious head injury.

Mr Wright surrendered to police on November 21 and was charged with attempted murder.

He has been remanded in custody and is yet to enter a plea.

Sergeant McCusker said the man has undergone extensive surgery.

“He is in probably the most serious medical condition a person can be in,” he said.

“We do hold grave fears as to his health and whether he will recover from this event.”

The violent incident was witnessed by more than a dozen people with several stopping to render first aid.

Sergeant McCusker thanked those who helped the injured man and later came forward with witness statements and dashcam footage of the offence.

He asked anyone else who observed the incident to come forward.

“The witnesses have said it was shocking, horrific and callous, and it is,” he said.

It is understood that a large sum of money was strewn across the road and inside the Tiida.

Sergeant McCusker said that money may provide some clues as to why the parties met up in Toowoomba prior to the incident at Withcott.

Jonathan Wright, 46, has been charged with attempted murder.

“We would ask anyone who may have knowledge of how that money came to be in the car to come forward,” he said.

“We are not in a position to talk to the 33-year-old male and he is not in a position to talk to us.”

Police believe the Holden Rodeo ute travelled back up the Toowoomba Range after the incident and may still be in the area and was bearing registration plates 887-RWN.

No vehicle matching its description has been found burnt out or otherwise destroyed.
