A man who police allege supplied high-risk drugs to “young people” for more than six months across the northern Somerset region has been arrested and released on bail.

A 25-year-old Toogoolawah man was arrested on Monday for multiple charges of supplying scheduled one drugs.

Toogoolawah officer in charge sergeant John Cumner alleged the man was supplying high-risk drugs to young people from the Toogoolawah, Kilcoy and Esk areas.

In December last year, the man’s phone was seized during a search, and is still being held by police.

Sergeant Cumner said it was possible the 25-year-old would incur further charges as the investigation continued.

“There are further investigations in relation to the matter and may be further charges laid against him, and further arrests of others involved,” sergeant Cumner said.

In his 14 years at the Toogoolawah station, sergeant Cumner said it was the most significant drug arrest for the town.

“It will be alleged over a six-month period the supply was ongoing, regularly given to young people,” he said.

Sergeant Cumner said a continuous supply of information from the community aided the investigation.

“The whole thing had kicked off through information from the local community. In December we had a significant amount of information to make an application for a search warrant,” he said.

“It’s certainly a community-led event which is fantastic. It shows the town people are looking out for each other and not tolerating these sorts of behaviours.”

Officers from Toogoolawah station and the major and organised crime unit were involved with the operation.

The man was released on bail due to appear in the Toogoolawah Magistrates Court on August 13.

Sergeant Cumner urged anyone with family who had participated in high-risk drugs, or who had been involved in the supply to contact police anonymously so he could assist with support services.

“These types of events can have a dramatic impact on small communities, within families and can contribute to other social issues as well,” he said.

“It’s something we care deeply about – trying to protect the community as much as we can – but there’s also the aftercare aspect as well to provide support.”
