The scent of financial reprieve could linger in the air for South East Queenslander’s searching for high paying jobs, as Lockyer Valley Correctional Centre looks to fill more than 800 positions in 2024.

Located 12km northeast of Gatton, the 1536-bed men’s health and rehabilitation facility has been commissioned to reduce the strain on Queensland’s straining prison system.

Police and Corrective Services Minister Mark Ryan said the men’s prison is set to flourish the economic prosperity of the Lockyer Valley by guaranteeing hundreds of ongoing jobs for the foreseeable future.

“The new Lockyer Valley Correctional Centre will geographically be the biggest centre in Queensland, bringing substantial ongoing job prospects and economic support to the Lockyer Valley,” Mr Ryan said.

The Lockyer Valley region is also home to Southern Queensland Correctional Centre for women, the first prison in the region which opened in 2012.

Queensland Corrective Services Assistant Commissioner of southern region custodial operations Joel Smith said the combined staff ratio between the two prisons will make them the Lockyer Valley’s largest employers.

“About 300 people are employed now at the women’s facility and when the men’s centre opens in 2024, there will be more than 1100 people working in the precinct, making us one of the largest employers in the region,” he said.

“Our commitment to the community will continue to grow as we build our presence within the Lockyer Valley and support the local economy through employment and supply chain opportunities.”

Multiple positions ranging from Custodial Correctional Officers (CCO), psychiatrists, counsellors, trade instructors and more are looking to be filled, with a focus on hiring CCO’s.

A Queensland Corrective Services spokesperson said 10-weeks paid training is provided for CCO’s prior to starting.

An official opening date hasn’t yet been released, with Lockyer Valley Correctional Centre set to open sometime in 2024.
