A gulf of flames erupted in a suburban Lockyer Valley street after an abandoned vehicle was set alight.

Gatton police believe the vehicle was used for hooning, with no reports of it having been stolen.

Further investigation has revealed the vehicle was stripped by unknown persons before it was then set alight after it was left broken down for a number of hours.

It is understood the fire began some time after 10pm on July 11, with the vehicle located on Woodlands Rd, near the green of Gatton Jubilee Golf Club.

A Queensland Fire Department spokesman said two crews located the vehicle fully engulfed, extinguishing the blaze just before 11pm.

Firefighters conducted a search of the vehicle once the fire was out and found no persons were inside, the QFD spokesman said.

Gatton police will continue to make inquiries into the incident and have not yet made any arrests.
