With less than 24 hours before Tropical Cyclone Alfred arrives on the South East Queensland coast, residents are scrambling for last minute supplies.

While many retailers have closed in the most severely impacted areas, some have remained open but are expected to close earlier than normal.

Coles and Woolworths both released statements earlier today to indicate there would be some stores closed from today, with updates on reopening to come in the following days, while other stores like Aldi made the decision to shut all stores in the southeast.

“We know we are an essential part of the communities we serve in times of natural disasters. As such, we have been working hard to keep our stores open as long as it has been safe to do so,” a Coles spokesman said.

“As Cyclone Alfred gets closer, we have made the decision to begin closing our stores in highly impacted areas. This will ensure our team have time to get home while it is still safe.

“We will keep a close eye on the impacts from Cyclone Alfred, and make a decision on reopening our stores as soon as it is safe to do so.”

Woolworths said it had experienced delays in stock being trucked in and that some stores would be open.

“Where it remains safe and possible to do so, some of our stores in Brisbane and Sunshine Coast are open this morning to serve the community, however we expect them to close early throughout the day to ensure safe travel home for our team,” a spokesman said.

“We ask customers to please check the latest operating hours for their local store on the Woolworths website, which will be regularly updated.”

The central Coles in Cleveland closed its door at 10am, leaving IGA at Cleveland the only grocer open in the suburb.

IGA at Mount Cotton continues to stock bread and milk and toilet paper.

Woolworths at Victoria Point East has also closed but Woolworths west side will remain shut.

Below you will find the comprehensive list of the opening status of various major grocery, retail, petrol and food outlets across the southeast.

Meanwhile, all DoorDash operations have been suspended as of 12.00am Thursday, following a severe weather warning issued the previous day to dashers.

It is understood that merchants affected by the cyclone will have access to grants through the DoorDash Merchant Disaster Relief Fund.

DoorDash will continue to monitor conditions and follow guidance from local authorities before resuming operations.

When attempting to place a delivery on the DoorDash app, a message appears in the checkout menu stating that they “can’t deliver to this address right now.”

On the Uber Eats and Menulog apps, no restrictions appear when attempting to place an order.

Uber and Uber Eats services have been suspended in parts of Byron Bay, Gold Coast, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie and Brisbane.

“Our thoughts are with the communities already impacted and those preparing for Tropical Cyclone Alfred,” an Uber spokeswoman said.

“The safety of everyone on the platform is our top priority. Our Safety Response team is monitoring the situation, and we have already temporarily suspended services in a number of locations across Northern NSW and QLD and will resume operations only when it’s safe to do so. We urge everyone to exercise caution and follow the guidance of any government announcement.”

It is understood promotions offered to drivers will be suspended for impacted areas over the weekend.
