Scott Cabrie Vigil

An emotional candlelight vigil has been held for slain Hervey Bay Uber driver Scott Cabrie, with hundreds gathering on Friday night to pay their respects to the beloved community member.

Mr Cabrie, 47, was found dead near a boat ramp on Power House Rd in Howard last Sunday after being missing for several days.

Two teenagers have since been charged with murder in relation to the Toogoom man’s death.

On Friday night about 200 people sat along Torquay Beach near the sailing club, holding candles and sharing memories of the man who was a friend to many.

A table with candles, floral tributes and a display of photos of Mr Cabrie set the scene, with the sound of waves in the background as the community paid tribute to his life.

Mentos mints were handed out in his memory, a reminder of Mr Cabrie’s hospitality to every customer who climbed inside his vehicle.

His close friend and fellow Uber driver Cameron Thomas spoke during the vigil, sharing memories of his mate.

Mr Thomas spoke of what an amazing person Mr Cabrie had been.

“If you were down, he’d lift you up,” he said.

As well as being an Uber driver, Mr Cabrie had worked for Hit 101.9 Fraser Coast radio station and he had always been a “people person”, Mr Thomas said.

“He loved people, he loved to laugh,” he said.

“I know most of you have been in his Uber and loved having a laugh with him.

“If you got into his car and you weren’t smiling, by the end of the trip you’d probably have a big grin on your face.

“That was our Scotty.”

The impact that Mr Cabrie had on the community could be seen in how many people had shown up for him, Mr Thomas said.

He told of how he had been in a crash when he had first begun driving for Uber, leaving his car a write-off.

Left with no car through no fault of his own, Mr Thomas was dispirited, but then Mr Cabrie offered him a lend of a vehicle.

That was the start of their friendship, with the two becoming as close as brothers.

“Scotty is an integral part of this community, he is loved by so many,” Mr Thomas said.

“I’m sure we’re all going to miss him.”

A minute of silence followed for Mr Cabrie, with the crowd, including his brother Ian, raising their candles high in his memory.

A funeral service will be held for Mr Cabrie on the beach at Toogoom on the corner of Kingfisher Parade and Helm Street on February 24 at 10am.
