Four men have been charged over a “major” riot in which jail guards were injured. Here’s how the first related court appearance unfolded.

A man has appeared briefly in court via videolink this week, charged with rioting at Maryborough Correctional Centre.

Trent Michael Thrupp is one of four charged for his alleged role in the riot which sent the jail into lockdown earlier this year.

During his court appearance, a brief of evidence was ordered to be disclosed.

Gary Donald Jeffs and Daniel Ian Gray also had charges of rioting at Maryborough Correctional Centre briefly mentioned in court on Tuesday.

A fourth man was also due to face court on a charge of rioting.

The cases were adjourned to October 11.

The charges relate to a major disturbance at the jail on January 24, 2022, which a Queensland Corrective Services’ spokeswoman said was quickly brought under control by responding corrective services officers.

“Three officers received medical assessment on site, and one received external medical treatment,” she said.

“Four prisoners have been charged with riot with circumstance of aggravation under the Corrective Services Act 2006.

“The safety and security of Queensland’s correctional centres is the absolute priority and these charges show there are serious consequences for prisoners whose actions represent a serious threat to the safety of our staff and other prisoners.”
