Popular online shopping platform Temu has recalled a woollen children’s jumper in breach of Australian safety standards after a young girl was seriously injured when hers caught alight at a family party.
Daniella Jacobs-Herd was left with burns to 13 per cent of her body after a gust of spent sparks from a nearby backyard fire onto the woollen “Unicorn” hoodie she was wearing, igniting the fabric.
The fire was part of her mother Hannah’s birthday celebrations at their Urangan home on July 13, 2024.
The blanket “melted” to Daniella’s wrists, fingers and chest, and left her with flash burns on her face.
A neighbour rushed to help the family while Hannah kept Daniella in the shower until paramedics arrived.
She was then rushed to the Hervey Bay Hospital with life threatening injuries, with the family saying they watched chunks of skin falling off the young girl due to the severity of the burns.
It has now been revealed the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission found the jumper breached Australian standards for children’s nightwear as it did not include a fire warning label, the ABC reported Tuesday.
As a result, third party online shopping platform Temu issued a voluntary recall on the hoodie in November.
The recall notice said there was a “risk of serious burn injuries” from the item if exposed to heat or flames, and consumers may be unaware of the risks.
The jumper, manufactured in China, was offered for sale between October 10, 2023 and March 15, 2024.
Anyone who owned the item was advised to destroy it, and a full refund was offered by Temu on behalf of trader Sunshine Towels.
Hannah told News at the time of the incident she “didn’t realise how flammable they were”.
Speaking with the ABC she said her daughter had been left traumatised from the incident saying “fire scares her”.
In the months since the incident Daniella, who has autism and ADHD, underwent more than a dozen procedures and required skin grafts.
She spent eight weeks in hospital, and still faces more skin graft procedures across the next decade as she continues to recover.
A GoFundMe was launched to help Daniella, raising almost $7500 for her recovery.
The ABC reported the family was now exploring a possible compensation claim against Temu.
It reported a Temu spokesman said the company was facilitating talks between the family and the manufacturer that sold the jumper on the platform.
