Parents of teen driver heckled at court

The parents of a teenage boy charged over a fatal crash that claimed the lives of three women in Maryborough and left a fourth fighting for life have been heckled and abused by a bystander as they left the courthouse.

“Idiots. Idiots. Shameful parents,” a heckler shouted as he followed them down the street after they left the courthouse where their 13-year-old son appeared before a closed court.

“Three people are dead.”

Sheree Robertson, 52, a nurse from Maryborough Hospital, former Riverside Christian College student Kelsie Davies, 17, and Reach Church pastor Michale Chandler, 29, died in the crash on Saltwater Creek Rd, which happened about 10.45pm on Sunday.

Tinana’s Kaylah Behrens, 23, is critical and fighting for life in Royal Brisbane Hospital.

The alleged driver of the Mercedes-Benz, a 13-year-old from Bundaberg, sustained minor injuries to his foot.

He was taken to hospital but released shortly after and taken to the Maryborough watch house where he was charged with three counts of dangerous operation of motor vehicle causing death and one count of unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

On Tuesday, May 2, the boy had his charges mentioned for the second time in as many days.

Multiple media organisations made application to sit in court as the matter was mentioned in Maryborough Magistrates Court.

Fraser Coast nurse Sheree Robertson, Reach Church pastor Michale Chandler and teen Kelsie Davies were killed in the horror crash in Maryborough.

Magistrate John Milburn denied the applications, saying it could be prejudicial for the child if the mention went into the details that were more than just administrative.

During the application, the court heard that it was possible the teen would make an application for bail through his legal representative, Morgan Harris.

During the appearance, the boy’s parents were in attendance.

The media scrum waited outside in an effort to speak to the boy’s parents when they emerged.

As they walked from the court, however, they were addressed by a man who was waiting outside the building, heckling them with baseless accusations.

The parents quickly walked along Wharf St to leave the area.

The boy will appear in court again at a later date.
