A teenager charged with causing a deadly shed fire at Pacific Haven in 2022 will have to wait more time behind bars before his matter can be heard in a committal proceeding, a Qld court has heard.
The teen, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with arson, murder, and burglary after he was arrested in Rockhampton June 24, 2024 when he was 18.
The shed fire took place on February 18, 2022, on Pacific Haven Drive, allegedly killing 50-year-old Damian Ramsey.
On Wednesday morning in the Hervey Bay Children's Court, Prosecutor Christopher Cook of the Department of Public Prosecutions, appeared via telephone and said there will be a committal hearing for the matter but could not confirm how many witnesses there will need to be for further proceedings.
He said he only recently received the brief of evidence from police prosecution after the file was transferred to the DPP.
During a committal mention for the matter in December 2024, Caitlin Shannon-Dear of Legal Aid Queensland said her client had been moved from Brisbane Youth Detention Centre to an adult offenders jail, the Capricornia Correctional Centre, 21km north of Rockhampton.
Magistrate Trinity McGarvie confirmed dates for more hearings later in the year, with a directions hearing set for October 20, while the committal proceeding is set for November 17 and 18, 2025.
The teen will be required to appear via video link for the directions hearing and in-person for the two-day proceedings in November.
Both the prosecution and defence are expected to attend the proceedings in-person.
