A Code Black was called at Maryborough Hospital after a woman became verbally abusive towards staff just days after she caused a public disturbance at the Brolga Theatre, a court has heard.

Sarah Janice Valentine pleaded guilty to one count of committing a public nuisance, contravening a police direction, wilful damage and two counts of common assault when she appeared via videolink in the Maryborough Magistrates Court this week.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Sonia Edwards said in relation to the public nuisance matter, police had attended the Brolga Theatre on April 18 after being notified of a disturbance.

When speaking to Valentine, she told police she had been inside the theatre to see her boyfriend and she said wouldn’t leave until she saw him.

Police spoke with an informant who said Valentine had been inside the building for two hours trying to get into parts of the theatre she was not allowed in.

The informant told police Valentine had been “yelling and screaming incoherently” at staff members and members of the public, Sgt Edwards said.

Her behaviour caused members of the public and the staff to feel uncomfortable, Sgt Edwards said.

Valentine was given a direction to move on by police but she told police she was not going to leave the premises and she was going back in.

She walked towards one of the officers and she was again told she must leave or she would be contravening a direction.

Valentine told police if they wanted her to leave they would have to arrest her and she again attempted to walk past the officers.

She was arrested and taken to Maryborough Watch-house and she was released on bail.

On April 20, Valentine was at Hervey Bay Hospital for a “medical purpose” Sgt Edwards said, staying in the surgical ward.

She entered the bathroom where she could be heard by staff yelling and swearing.

At that time, the toilet roll holder was broken off the wall in a bathroom, which was discovered when she self-discharged, Sgt Edwards said.

On April 22, Valentine went to Maryborough Hospital and stayed overnight.

She started becoming verbally aggressive and threatening towards staff and demanded that staff take her to her partner, who was not at the hospital.

Staff attempted to calm Valentine who continued to be verbally abusive, resulting in a Code Black, requiring security assistance in regard to her behaviour.

Security made their way to the emergency department while Valentine picked up boxes of masks and plastic folders, throwing them towards staff, while continuing to shout.

One of the wardsman had to restrain Valentine, Sgt Edwards said, and she kicked out at him, hitting him in the hip area.

A doctor spoke with Valentine and she refused further treatment and she was told she could leave.

Valentine got up from the bed and used her right foot to kick the doctor in the abdomen-hip area.

Security again restrained her and she attempted to regain entry into the hospital before police attended.

Valentine had spent 46 days in custody, the court was told.

Defence lawyer Morgan Harris said Valentine had spent too much time in custody and it was the first time she had spent time in a correctional centre.

Her conduct was clearly “down to mental health”, Mr Harris said.

Magistrate John Milburn said he was concerned about the amount of time Valentine had spent in custody.

Given the lengthy period she had spent in custody for the offences, Mr Milburn said he would convict and not further punish.

Convictions were recorded.
