A man who burned his fiance’s wedding dress and car for cheating on him has faced court for breaching the suspended sentence he received for those crimes.

Jake Frederick Wright, 43, was resentenced in Maryborough Magistrates Court on Monday, July 8.

In 2023, Wright pleaded guilty to wilful damage and arson in Maryborough District Court.

The charges related to an incident in May 2022, when Wright discovered messages of a sexual nature on his partner’s phone from another man.

After an argument between the two, his partner drove her car to a park at Granville and left it there.

Wright later saw the car at the park and struck it with an object, the court was told.

He smashed one of the windows, placed her wedding dress inside and set it on fire.

About 4.30am, emergency services arrived at the scene where the vehicle was on fire and had been destroyed, the court was told.

Two scooters inside the car were also destroyed.

The court was told it was out of character for Wright and in the context of the breakdown of a 17-year relationship.

Burning the wedding dress had been Wright’s way of “demonstrating his heartbreak”, it heard.

At the time it was accepted that Wright had only intended to set the wedding dress on fire, not the car.

He was sentenced to two and a half years jail, suspended for four years.

The court heard Wright had breached the sentence twice after pleading guilty in early 2024 to two counts of drug driving, for which he was fined and disqualified from driving.

He had an acquired brain injury after he was treated for an ulcer and experienced complications after surgery and he was now living with his mother, who was his carer.

Judge Carl Heaton said the breaches were not anywhere near the seriousness of the offending that saw him receive the suspended sentence.

He said it would be unjust to activate the suspended sentence and instead extended the operational period of the sentence by six months.
