A driver busted going more than 40km over the speed limit and overtaking on double white lines on the Bruce Hwy has copped a fierce spray from a police officer sick of witnessing the carnage on the state’s roads, as well as fines totalling more than $2000.
Police allegedly observed the red Subaru WRX travelling at 144 km/h in a 100km/h zone about 8.40am on the Bruce Hwy at Gootchie, south of Maryborough, on February 13, as well as reportedly overtaking another vehicle on double continuous dividing lines.
Police intercepted the vehicle on Sheehans Rd.
The driver, a 47-year-old Buderim man was fined $1780 and eight demerit points and will be subject to a high-speed licence suspension for a period of six months.
He was also fined an additional $278 and three demerit points for failing to keep left of double continuous dividing lines.
When he was stopped, the officer questioned how fast the man was travelling and informed him he had committed a “high speed offence”.
“We’re travelling back to Brisbane today, okay, so we’ve been up in the Wide Bay-Fraser Coast region for the past week,” the police officer said.
“In our office we travel around the entire state of Queensland and the reason we do that is we are trying to bring down road trauma.
“There’s people dying on the roads every day in this state and we are well and truly overrepresented within the total Australia-wide road toll.
“But in this region alone, it’s worse than anywhere.
“Now with you doing speeds in excess of 40km over the limit, you are going to kill yourself, or you’re going to kill somebody else, or worse you’re going to kill maybe mum and dad and a few kids coming the other way.
“We’re trying to prevent that.”
She urged him to slow down, take care and drive safely.
Acting Inspector Shelley Moore from the Maryborough Patrol Group reminded drivers that speeding is one of the fatal five behaviours responsible for the majority of fatal traffic accidents.
“There is absolutely no reason to be travelling over 40km over the speed limit,” she said.
“Police in the Wide Bay Burnett district are working very hard every day to reduce the road toll, we do not want to see this sort of dangerous behaviour.
“Remember, we are out there, enforcing safe driving. If you don’t want to see us, do the right thing.”
