An accused stalker who allegedly made “serious and concerning threats” against a parole officer and a solicitor has been released on bail.
Byron Adrian Orr-Harris was charged with using a carriage service to menace or harass, using a carriage service to make a threat to kill and two counts of unlawful stalking.
Mr Orr-Harris applied for bail in Hervey Bay District Court last week.
The court heard the alleged offending included threats to use a firearm.
The offences allegedly happened when Mr Orr-Harris was on parole and while he was remanded in custody, the court was told.
The court heard Mr Orr-Harris was diagnosed with schizophrenia and depression and was currently medicated.
He had served 333 days in custody and the court heard there was the risk of Mr Orr-Harris serving too much time in prison even if matters were to resolve with a plea of guilty.
Judge Ian Dearden said Mr Orr-Harris was charged with a number of serious offences.
Mr Orrs-Harris had made threats to use firearms and Judge Dearden said he was at “some risk of reoffending”.
The complainants included a parole officer and a solicitor just doing their jobs who had been the subject of “serious and concerning threats”, he said.
He said short term emergency accommodation court be facilitated if he was released, with a view to finding appropriate long-term accommodation.
He acknowledged Mr Orr-Harris was at risk of spending too much time in custody.
Mr Orr-Harris would be required to report two days a week, a condition of no alcohol or drugs, not interstate or international travel and the use of an electronic monitoring device.
Judge Dearden granted the application for bail.
