AS SOMEONE who has worked closely around mental health, and experienced challenges personally, I can vouch for the difficulty men encounter with coming clean about their inner demons.
There's a sense of shame some feel with the notion they can't "soldier on" with their problems, or that seeking emotional support from their family or friends is somehow weak.
And that's why I'm all behind groups like Fraser Coast Mates, who actively work to break this stigma of mental health among men.
Suicide doesn't just result in someone being taken away from the community - it results in a partner, parent, child, friend, co-worker being permanently removed from the community, and leaves a hole that cannot be filled.
Misunderstood mental health issues can ruin lives, and in an age where suicide and depression are constant issues that plague the community, it's not enough to just throw money at the issues and hope they go away.
There needs to be engagement, support networks that can make it easier for people to understand this is not a fight to be alone in.
And that's why events like golf days, tennis competitions and music nights, hosted by groups like Fraser Coast Mates are so important.
