A new film company promises to put the Fraser Coast up in lights with two films to be produced annually in the region and the first likely to be a romantic comedy at Fraser Island.

Fraser Coast Films grew out of the team that directed and produced the upcoming psychological thriller 13 Summers, a movie that was shot in Hervey Bay in late 2022 and due for release later this year.

The movie stars Bec Hewitt, Georgie Parker, Nathan Phillips and Hannah Levien.

Director Tam Sainsbury, writer Jeremy Stanford, editor and producer William Misset have joined Glen Winney from Win Projects to start the new business, which will bring the Fraser Coast to the fore when it comes to the Australian film industry.

Another movie is also planned to be filmed on K’gari (Fraser Island) later this year, titled He Loves Me Not.

It will be a romantic comedy about a woman who goes on a reality television show akin to The Bachelor just for the money, but ends up falling in love.

Mr Winney said he had been approached to be a sponsor for 13 Summers.

“After several discussions I ended up investing in 13 Summers instead of sponsoring,” he said.

They had discussed how the Fraser Coast did not have a film industry and while films had been shot in the region in the past, they had not been about showcasing the region.

“I wanted a film industry that actually promoted Fraser Coast and Fraser Island all over the world,” Mr Winney said.

Mr Winney said they were all equal partners in the new company.

By building a location database, Mr Winney is hopeful the Fraser Coast will attract a blockbuster to be filmed in the region, “even if it’s not us who does it”.

Ms Sainsbury said the team had enjoyed filming on the Fraser Coast, especially given how supportive the council and the tourism board had been.

Mr Stanford said the region’s stunning locations were one of the reasons they wanted to form the company.

“There’s just so much here that we can use,” he said.

As to who would star in He Loves Me Not, Ms Sainsbury said Ms Parker would have a role in the project, but negotiations were still underway regarding other roles.
