Families across the Fraser Coast and Maranoa regions are mourning the loss of a beloved great-grandmother who died after suffering critical injuries on her way to mark a milestone.

Joy Lenore Thomsen, 81, was a passenger in a car heading towards the wedding of her Roma-based grandson Travis and his now wife Emily when the LandCruiser and a HiLux towing a caravan collided on the Warrego Highway about 12.35pm on Friday, September 16.

She was left fighting for her life as a result of the collision which happened at Jackson North, about 80kms east of Roma and flown to Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital where she sadly succumbed to her injuries on the Sunday.

Following confirmation of her funeral, which will be held on Friday, tributes flowed from those who had known and loved her as did condolences for members of the extended Thomsen family which has been well regarded in the Maryborough community for generations.

The family was approached but did not want to comment during this difficult time.

In a notice, posted on the J Kirk and Son’s Facebook page, Mrs Thomsen (nee Cooke) was remembered as the beloved wife of Wilfred ‘Nook’ (dec’d), the “much loved mother and mother-in-law of Donna and Barry Beckett, Kerrie and Darren Thomsen-Hall, Stephen and Amanda Thomsen and Amanda and Iain Jackson”.

She was also the “loving nana of Ben, Danika and James (dec’d), Stacey, Scott, Mitch, Brody, Kelsey, Kane, Travis and their partners”.

Under the post, which attracted more than 150 reactions, Debbie Clark wrote “my deepest sympathy to you all. Joy and Nook were such a part of our lives growing up in North Aramara. Joy was a very special lady” while Shirley Probyn recalled “Joy’s fantastic 80th birthday” and paid tribute to a “glorious lady”.

Expressing her “deepest condolences”, Lois Gambie said, “RIP Joy, was a pleasure to work with you all those years ago at the M’boro Base Hospital” and sending her love to Mrs Thomsen’s children, Peita Lutz wrote “Mum left such a legacy – a loving family x”.

Mrs Thomsen’s service will take place at the Maryborough Crematorium’s Heritage Chapel from 11am followed by internment in the Garden of Rest Cemetery.

Investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing.
