Sneaking into the bedroom of his girlfriend’s daughter in the early hours of the morning, a Maryborough man took perverted photos of her while she slept.
He was caught when the child noticed the man’s phone facing into the bathroom area, set up to take more photos.
The 54-year-old, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the child, pleaded guilty in Maryborough District Court to 13 counts of indecent treatment of a child, one count of attempted indecent treatment of a child and one count of possessing child exploitation material.
The court heard the man’s offending first came to the attention of the girl’s mother when she saw images of her sleeping child on a screen saver which was cycling through the photos on his phone.
The photos alarmed the girl’s mother, the court heard.
In a later incident, the girl, who was aged 14 to 15 during the offending, noticed the man’s phone set up in the direction of the bathroom.
She took a photo of the phone and went to her grandmother’s house.
When the man turned up at the home, a woman who was at the residence asked to see his phone.
She could see the phone was the same one the child had taken a photo of, the court was told.
The man claimed to have left it in the bathroom by accident.
The girl was taken to Maryborough Police Station and a complaint was made.
Police examined the man’s phone and found 13 different photos taken in the night.
In each, the girl was asleep wearing underwear and a top and the photos focused on her crotch and buttocks.
In one, the side of her breast could be seen, the court was told.
The man had been a trusted member of the family, the court heard, having been in a relationship with the girl’s mother for six years.
He was given a head sentence of 15 months jail, suspended after four months with an operational period of two years.
