A young businessman who has put his hand up for the March council elections, says the Fraser Coast needs to “innovate and try new things” to reach its potential.

Luke Strochnetter, 23, will run for Division 10 in Hervey Bay, which includes notable tourist attractions such as the Urangan Pier, the Hervey Bay Botanical Gardens and Shelly Beach.

The seat has been held this term by Zane O’Keefe, who has not yet announced whether he will be seeking another term.

A long-time resident of the Fraser Coast since moving from Tasmania in 2007, Mr Strochnetter said the motivating factor behind running for council was “to see the Fraser Coast become a place we can be proud of for generations to come”.

“I have always been interested in local issues since a very young age,” he said on Monday.

“ Since I was 13, I would spend weekends speaking to local businesses and organising fundraising events for many charities including Relay for Life.”

Mr Strochnetter’s campaign will centre around the state of Division 10 roads, which he says are “extremely dangerous”.

“In Division 10 there are many extremely dangerous intersections such as the Ann Street, Boat Harbour Drive and Dayman Street, Pulgul Street intersections.”

With 43 deaths across the Wide Bay/Burnett in 2023, the region is one of most dangerous to drive in within Queensland.
