Neighbouring properties were evacuated on Monday morning as firefighters battled to control a blaze that engulfed a house in Hervey Bay.
Multiple crews were called to the property on George St, near its intersection with Alice St and just north of Pialba State School, just after 10am.
A Queensland Fire Department spokesman said the fire appeared to have started in a bedroom on the top floor of the two-storey home.
Firefighters arrived to find black smoke billowing from the building.
The fire was contained to the top level of the two-storey apartment complex after one hour and 15 minutes.
All occupants escaped, although the tenant in the apartment where the fire started and their neighbour directly below them were sent to Hervey Bay Hospital with smoke inhalation.
Officer Jason Fothergill of the Torquay Fire and Rescue Station said smoke alarms saved the occupants’ lives.
“The occupant of the fire zone on level two was alerted to the fire by a smoke alarm,” he said.
“It’s a very timely reminder, especially coming into the Christmas season.
“Ensure you’ve got working smoke alarms within your house because it does save lives.”
The second level of the apartment complex was “totally destroyed” by the fire, while the bottom level sustained water and smoke damage from the fire above.
Mr Fothergill and the police were yet to determine the cause of the fire.
Police later entered the premises to conduct an investigation.
