A man facing a battle with a brain tumour was banned from Bunnings after he was involved in trying to steal a drill, then later caught by police with cannabis stuffed in his socks.

After initially pleading not guilty to the charges earlier this year, Dakoda Glen Sorensen pleaded guilty to possessing dangerous drugs, unauthorised dealing with shop goods and attempted stealing when he faced Hervey Bay Magistrates Court.

The court heard Sorensen had been diagnosed with a brain tumour and needed medical treatment in Brisbane.

Facing a suspended jail sentence, Sorensen asked for a lengthy adjournment so he could have his medical appointments, fearing he would be going to prison.

Magistrate Stephen Guttridge asked to hear the facts of the charges to determine if they would be punished with a jail sentence.

The court heard Sorensen had picked up a $39 Bluetooth speaker from Big W in Pialba and placed it in his backpack, leaving without paying.

CCTV footage was used to identify Sorensen.

In another incident, Sorensen attended Bunnings with other offenders.

While one distracted a staff member, Sorensen and another man took a drill and placed it in a bag.

Staff confronted the men and a drill and a wall plaque was handed back.

The men, including Sorensen, were banned from the store.

On a later date, Sorensen was stopped by police while riding an electric tricycle on Boat Harbour Drive.

He admitted to having cannabis on him, including some which was stuffed in his socks.

After hearing the facts, Mr Guttridge said he would not send Sorensen to prison.

Instead he extended the operational period of the suspended sentence by six months and fined him a total of $850.
