More than 16,000 people have fallen sick and recovered from Covid in the Wide Bay since the start of the pandemic, while 35 have died.

Data released by Queensland Health shows 16,361 cases of the virus have been confirmed in the region, which takes in Bundaberg, Hervey Bay and Maryborough, with 160 active cases in the Wide Bay as of May 7.

Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service did not provide an age range for the death toll in its response.

Across Queensland, 4673 new cases have been detected.

In total there are currently 41,358 active cases across the state, with 426 people in hospital and 12 people in intensive care.

There have been 7748 tests carried out in the past 24 hours, according to Queensland Health data, while 92.2 per cent of eligible Queenslanders are vaccinated.

In total, there have been 905 Covid-related deaths in Queensland.

In the past month, Queensland’s restrictions have further eased after health authorities announced a change in isolation rules for household contacts and unvaccinated international travellers.

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic more than two years ago, any household contacts who tested positive to the virus had faced mandatory isolation across Queensland.

But now, those isolation orders have been scrapped for asymptomatic household contacts, along with the quarantine rules for international arrivals.

Asymptomatic close contacts are now required to test for the virus every two days.

Close contacts with no symptoms will be required to wear a mask for seven days when indoors, as well as when they are unable to socially distance outdoors.

Health authorities say anyone with Covid symptoms is still required to get tested and isolate at home.

Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat, fatigue and loss of taste or smell.
