Through break-ins and floods, Maryborough’s Myatt Jewellers has survived and thrived through it all.

More than 14 years after first opening their doors, owners Geoff and Rebecca Myatt are preparing to move on and close their business in the central business district at the corner of Adelaide and Kent streets.

Announcing the move in a Facebook post, the couple said the past 14 years was a blessing.

“The time has come where we have made the decision to close our business,” the post said.

“We would like to thank each and every one of our customers that have supported our business over the last 14 years, both here in Maryborough and our original shop in Childers.

“Without you, and our amazing staff that we’ve had, we would not have been able to build our business to the great business that it is today.

“We are extremely proud of what we have built, persevering through the struggles of small business.”

The business has survived floods and break-ins over the years

In July 2019, up to $10,000 worth of damage was done at the business and a tray of bracelets was stolen during a break-in.

Then in January 2022, the Myatts braced themselves through two floods, during the first of which the levy which was designed to save the CBD was breached.

Thankfully, with council workers battling through the night using Handy Hire pumps, the damage to the business was minimal.

The business has also been there for the community during the hard times.

In the wake of a triple fatal crash that rocked the community in May last year, claiming the lives of Michale Chandler, 29 and Kelsie Davies, 17 as well as 52-year-old nurse Sheree Robertson, Myatt Jewellers made a donation of $7,363 donation, the store’s total earnings from May 4, 2023.

The post said the business was still very successful and the current economic stress was not the reason behind the decision to close.

“Please know, as this is the conclusion that most people go to, our business is still a thriving business and the current state of the economy is not the reason we’re closing up.

“Our family is ready for new adventures that we are so excited about.

“Our business remains for sale and will do so up until the very end.”
The business would be holding a sale to clear “massive” amounts of stock, the post read, starting on June 10 and the business would continue to take in repair and custom work until otherwise stated.

The business would be closed from June 6 to June 8.

“Once again, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support.

“We look forward to seeing you all again over the next couple of months.”
